Overview

A Spiti Valley tour is an immersive high-altitude, cold-desert adventure in the Trans-Himalayas of Himachal Pradesh. Typically spanning 8 to 11 days, the journey features ancient Buddhist monasteries, remote villages, and high-motorable passes, commonly done as a circuit starting from Shimla or Manali.

Itinerary

Day 1: Chandigarh / Delhi to Shimla / Narkanda:

Drive from the plains into the foothills. Staying in Narkanda (approx. 2,700m) helps with the first stage of acclimatization.

Day 2: Narkanda to Sangla / Chitkul:

Drive through the "World’s Most Treacherous Road" section of the Hindustan-Tibet Highway. Stay at Chitkul, the last inhabited village near the Indo-Tibet border.

Day 3: Chitkul / Sangla to Kalpa:

A short drive to Kalpa for a spectacular sunset view of the Kinnaur Kailash mountain range..

Day 4: Kalpa to Tabo:

Enter the "Cold Desert." On the way, stop at Khab Sangam (confluence of Spiti and Sutlej rivers) and the high-altitude Nako Lake. Explore the 1,000-year-old Tabo Monastery, a UNESCO site.

Day 5: Tabo to Kaza via Dhankar & Pin Valley:

Visit the cliffside Dhankar Monastery. Detour into Pin Valley National Park to visit Mud Village, the last motorable point in the valley.

Day 6: Kaza – The Highest Villages Loop:

Visit the Hikkim Post Office (world’s highest), Komic (highest motorable village), and Langza (famous for marine fossils and a giant Buddha statue).

Day 7: Kaza to Key Monastery, Kibber & Chicham:

Explore the iconic Key Monastery and the spectacular Chicham Bridge, Asia’s highest suspension bridge.

Day 8: Kaza to Chandratal Lake:

Cross the Kunzum Pass (4,551m) to reach the crescent-shaped "Moon Lake". Camp at the designated sites near Chandratal for stargazing.

Day 9: Chandratal to Manali:

Drive through the rugged Batal-Gramphu stretch and cross the Atal Tunnel to reach the lush Manali valley.

Day 10: Manali to Chandigarh / Delhi:

Final leg of the journey returning to the plains.
