Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Chennai - Start your trip at the historic Fort St. George Museum to understand the city's colonial roots. Avoid the peak heat by visiting the towering Kapaleeshwarar Temple in Mylapore. Take a relaxing stroll along the world-famous Marina Beach as the sun goes down.
Day 2: Chennai to Mahabalipuram (2 hours) - Drive south to the coastal town of Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram). Explore the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Shore Temple and Arjunaβs Penance. Spend the night by the sea.
Day 3: Mahabalipuram to Pondicherry (2 hours) β Take a scenic drive to the former French colony of Pondicherry. Visit the experimental township of Auroville to see the golden Matrimandir. Explore the French Quarter's pastel-colored cafes and enjoy French-Tamil fusion cuisine.
Day 4: Pondicherry to Thanjavur (4-5 hours) β Drive inland towards the cultural heartland of the Cauvery Delta. Check out the awe-inspiring, UNESCO-protected Brihadisvara Temple (the "Big Temple") in Thanjavur, an engineering marvel.
Day 5: Thanjavur to Madurai (2.5 - 3 hours) β Head south to Madurai, the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu. Visit the magnificent Thirumalai Nayakkar Palace. Experience the iconic "Night Ceremony" at the massive Meenakshi Amman Temple, a sprawling city within a city.
Day 6: Madurai to Rameshwaram (3 hours) β Drive to the sacred island town of Rameshwaram. Walk the long corridors of the Ramanathaswamy Temple. Take a short drive to see the ghost town of Dhanushkodi, where the Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal meet.
Day 7: Rameshwaram to Chettinad (2.5 hours) β Travel to the Chettinad region, famous for its grand heritage mansions and unique cuisine. Visit the Athangudi tile factories and walk through the palatial streets of Kanadukathan.
Day 8: Chettinad to Kodaikanal (4.5 hours) β Ascend the Palani Hills to the cool, misty hill station of Kodaikanal. Take a peaceful boat ride on Kodaikanal Lake. Stroll around Coakerβs Walk for panoramic views of the valley.
Day 9: Kodaikanal to Ooty (6 hours) β Descend the hills and make your way up to the Nilgiri Hills, arriving in Ooty (Udhagamandalam). Relax at the Ooty Botanical Gardens and enjoy the cooler mountain climate.
Day 10: Ooty to Coimbatore & Departure β Take the heritage Nilgiri Mountain Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage toy train, to Coonoor. Afternoon: Drive down to Coimbatore (about 2 hours) to catch your departure flight or train home.
